INTRODUCTION

For decades, crop farming/experimentation has been conducted on the hilly, sand and clay belt in Guyana. In the Moblissa District, near the Soesdyke-Linden Highway, Mr. Baljit practises crop farming (primarily vegetables) for the local market. The farm is approximately 60 hectares (150 acres) in size and managed by the family along with the aid of a small gang of labourers. Crops include Chili pepper (Capsicum frutescens var. longum), Sweet pepper (Capsicum frutescens var.grossum), Boulanger (Solanum melongena), Tomato (Lycopersiconesculentum), Carilla (Momordica charantia), Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) Pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima), Ochro (Abelmoschus esculentus) and Borah (Vigna unguiculata) as the main crop. On the farm, crop rotation and integrated pest-disease-weed control measures are in place to maintain economic viability.

The travelling distance from Central Georgetown to the farm is 92 km (57 miles).
