The population includes Amerindians who live in settlements and other ethnic groups who live in established villages concentrated along the coast. The main economic activity is agriculture. Extensive fertile agricultural lands in the region produce crops such as rice, coffee, coconuts, ground provisions, vegetables and citrus. Some people also rare beef and dairy cattle. Timber production is carried out on a small scale.
