INTRODUCTION

The Mc Garrel’s Plant Nursery is a small enterprise located at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo. The enterprise which was established about five years ago is currently managed by the family and supplies vegetable seedlings such as cabbage, pak choy, tomato, boulanger, pepper, celery and lettuce to local farmers. In addition, ornamental plants, to a lesser extent, are offered for sale. The distance between Georgetown and Vergenoegen is approximately 24 km (15 miles).

Roed-en-Rust Beach is a take-off point to many islands in the Essequibo river including Nature Resorts such as Shanklands and Baracara Island. Parts of the river bank are of brown river sand and mud flats left uncovered by low tide. Predominant vegetation including Carrion Crow Bush (Cassia alata), Abé or Oil Palm (Elaeis guianensis) Bamboo Shrub (Bambusa vulgaris), Courida trees (Courida spp.), Bat Seed (Andira inermis) and Moco Moco (Montrichardia arborescens ). Debri included remains of fishing boats, tree trunks and few dead land animals washed up on the river bank.

Essequibo river is Guyana’s largest waterway whose mouth is 32 km (20 miles) wide and runs for 992 km (620 miles). Georgetown to Roed-en-Rust is about 38 km (24 miles).

The travelling distance from Central Georgetown to the Nursery, Bushy Park and Roden Rust Beaches are 37, 44 and 50 km (23, 27 and 31 miles), respectively.
