Guyana’s total area is 214,970 sq. km (about 83,000 sq. miles) somewhat smaller than Great Britain’s. The topography is varied and may be divided into four (4) ecological zones: low coastal plain, hilly sand and clay region, highland region and interior savannahs.
The country is bounded on the north by the Atlantic Ocean; on the south and south west by Brazil, from which it is separated by a line running from Mount Yakontipu to the source of the Ireng river, by the Ireng river itself, the Takutu river and Acarai mountains; on the east by Suriname from which it is separated by the Corentyne river; and on the north west by Venezuela, from which it is separated by Punta Playa, the Mururuima river, the upper part of the Amakura river, the two eastern spurs of the Imataka mountains, the Acarabisci, Cuyuni and Wenamu rivers and Mount Roraima.
The Coastline of Guyana extends about 434 km (270 miles) from Punta Playa to the mouth of Corentyne River. Its length running southward from Punta Playa to the southern Acarai mountains is about 805 Km (500 miles) and its measure across in a straight line from the Wenamu river to the mouth of the Corentyne river is about 483 km (300 miles).
The coast is flat and curved and chiefly because of its alluvial character, it is much broken by the mouths of numerous rivers and creeks that discharge into the ocean. The principal opening of the coast towards the sea are the mouths of the rivers: Berbice, Corentyne, Demerara, Essequibo, Moruca, Pomeroon and Waini.
Guyana is divided into ten (10) Administrative regions which are:
Region
Barima – Waini
Pomeroon – Supenaam
Essequibo Islands – West Demerara
* Demerara – Mahaica
Mahaica – Berbice
East Berbice – Corentyne
Cuyuni – Mazaruni
Potaro – Siparuni
Upper Takutu – Upper Essequibo
Upper Demerara – Upper Berbice
* Georgetown, the capital, is located in Region 4.
The purpose
of these divisions is to provide every Guyanese with an opportunity
to work for and share in the development of the country and also to
provide the government with better opportunities to assist all
citizens of Guyana.
