INTRODUCTION
Iwokrama is both a place - the Iwokrama Forest - and a research and development institution - the Iwokrama International Centre for Rain Forest Conservation and Development.
In 1989, the Government of Guyana made 360,000 hectares (900,000 acres) of Guyana's pristine forests available to the international community.
Iwokrama is responsible for the conservation and sustainable management of the Iwokrama Forest. Its mission is to promote the conservation and the sustainable and equitable use of tropical rain forests in a manner that will lead to lasting ecological, economic and social benefits to the people of Guyana and to the world in general, undertaking research, training and the development and dissemination of technologies.
