INTRODUCTION

A botanic garden is a place where trees and plants are grown for scientific study. Investigational work relating to agriculture in British Guiana followed very closely on the lines followed by most other British Colonies, having its roots in a Botanic Garden or Station devoted to the botanical study of the local flora, and the introduction of economicand ornamental plants from other tropical and sub-tropical countries. The formation of Botanic Gardens began in 1879 and during the same year Mr.G.S. Jenman was named Botanist and Superintendent of the Gardens. Today, the National Parks Commission is responsible for the management of the Gardens .
