INTRODUCTION

A trip was arranged by North Georgetown Secondary School for senior Agricultural Science students to visit the GUYSUCO (Guyana Sugar Corporation) Training Centre at Skeldon and along the same Corentyne Coast, Anand’s Rice Milling Complex --- producer of Karibee Rice.

Cane sugar and rice are the two (2) main agricultural products of Guyana. Sugar production involves the process of milling, purification, boiling, evaporation and crystallization of the juice to obtain white or brown (Demerara) sugar. Two by-products of these processes are rum and molasses. Rice production involves the processes of cleaning, drying and milling of paddy before separation, polishing and grading of grains to obtain various types as cargo rice, brown rice, white rice, parboiled rice, broken rice, old rice etc. Paddy suffers the processes of water-soaking and steaming in the production of parboiled rice. Two by-products of rice production are rice hull and bran.

The travelling distance from Central Georgetown to Skeldon, Corentyne is 186 km (116 miles).
