INTRODUCTION
The Amerindian village of Capoey, located on the Essequibo Coast west of Affiance at Capoey Lake, has an average population of 400 people who live in an area of about 40 square kilometers (16 sq. miles). The community is in need of substantial agricultural yields in order to a) improve nutrition in the community b) subsidise food for school feeding programmes c) earn more income. A Capoey Action Plan instituted by the United Nations has provided for the production of fruits, vegetables and grains including peas/beans on a plot of land located 6.4 km (4 miles) from Capoey Lake. The intended farm site, about 8 hectares (20 acres), is still in its preparatory phase and the project is scheduled to bear fruit after the next 5-6 months.
The travelling distance from Central Georgetown to Capoey Lake is approximately 96 km (60 miles)
