INTRODUCTION

Gold mining in the Omai area dates back more than 100 years ago. The pork knockers were active from 1889 to 1896 during which time some 1,896 kgs (61,000 ozs.) of gold were recovered by simple hand methods.

Omai Gold Mines Limited as a Project was finally launched in August 1991 and on May 1, 1997 poured its millionth ounce of gold bringing the Company's direct and indirect contributions to Guyana's economy from August 1991 - April 1997 to a total of US$181million.

The travelling distance from Central Georgetown to Omai Gold mines is 230 km (143 miles)
